SCTP   Huron Pointe Youth Shotgun Program

The Scholastic Clay Target Program ("SCTP") is a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation ("NSSF") through which gun clubs, shooting facilities and other organizations committed to the development of young adults can provide these individuals with opportunities to participate in organized, adult supervised trap, skeet and sporting clay activities including the Olympic styles of Bunker Trap and International Skeet.  Through the SCTP, the NSSF, in cooperation with the Amateur Trapshooting Association ("ATA"), the National Skeet Shooting Association ("NSSA"),  the National Sporting Clays Association ("NSCA") and USA Shooting (USAS), has exposed thousands of individuals in grades 12 and under to the positive experience of the shooting sports.

The SCTP is more than just another shooting program.  The SCTP is designed to instill in young people a set of personal values and character traits that teaches fair play, compassionate understanding, individual responsibility, sportsmanship, self-discipline, and personal commitment - qualities necessary to become successful and contributing members of society.

Competition is a part of the SCTP, but it is not the program's underlying principle.  The "win-at-all-costs" philosophy has no place in the SCTP.  Striving to win while playing by the rules does.  It is the DUTY of everyone involved in the SCTP - coaches, parents and participants - to be role models for SCTP team members to emulate by upholding high moral and ethical standards of personal conduct.

SCTP activities are designed to incorporate two indispensable elements - SAFETY AND FUN.  SAFETY is incorporated into ALL facets of SCTP activities.  Team practices and competitive shoots include the element of FUN for all participants.  SCTP participants learn the safe and responsible handling and use of firearms.  They discover the joy of contributing to a shared team goal and the commitment that goes along with it.  During this self-discovery process team members develop proficiency in a sport that can be shared and enjoyed with family and friends for a lifetime.

Huron Pointe Shooters win Silver in AIM Grand Championships

On August 7 & 8, 2010, over one thousand shooters, ages nine to twenty-three from all over the USA, took part in the American Trap Association (ATA) Grand American AIM (Achievement – Integrity – Marksmanship) Nationals held at the World Shooting & Recreational Complex in Sparta, Illinois.

Eleven members (a Graduate team, a Junior team and an alternate) of the Huron Pointe Sportsmen’s Association Youth Shotgun Program participated. The  Junior team consisted of  Dominique Ruggirello of Romeo, Henry Stallman of Lenox, Adam Castleman and Lance Adams of Durand, Nicholas Krasny of Grand Blanc and alternate Matthew Davis of St. Clair Shores. The Graduate team members were Clarence VanCamp of Marysville, Mike Sintebin of New Baltimore, Ben Wallace of St. Clair Shores, Steve Hawley of Macomb, and John Adams of Durand.

The Graduate team who took first place in the Michigan State AIM shoot continued their winning streak by placing second in the Nation earning silver medals. Clarence VanCamp also earned an individual silver medal after taking part in a tie breaker by shooting 25 birds straight and Mike Sintebin won first place in Graduate Class C. Steve Hawley’s name was drawn to receive a $1000 ATA scholarship to use at the college of his choice. The proud coach of this team is Vaughn VanCamp, with team coordinator Jean VanCamp.

If it weren’t for the club members, parents, families and donors to the HPSA Youth Shotgun Program, these youngsters would never have had an opportunity like this. Next year they are hoping to defend their title and hoping that their other teammates get a chance to share the excitement. For more information about or to make donations to the HPSA Youth Shotgun Program, please contact the VanCamps at (810) 364-6321.
